Want To Know about Antidepressants?

Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRI)

This medication works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain and blocking the reabsorption of serotonin into the neurons. This is commonly the type of medication first prescribed for depression.

Serotonin and Norepinephrine Re-uptake Inhibitors (SNRI)

This increases the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain by blocking or delaying their reabsorption into the neurons.

Atypical Antidepressants

As its name suggests, these medications act in an atypical manner relative to other antidepressants described here. Each is unique in their differences.

Tricyclic Antidepressants

This medication blocks the reabsorption of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, which increases the levels of these two chemicals in the brain. These are among the earliest developed antidepressants.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI)

The enzyme monoamine oxidoase is utilized in removing the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine from the brain. MAOIs prevent this removal, making more of these three chemicals available.
