The Basics about Treatment

What type of Specialist is right for you?

Psychiatrist vs. psychologist vs. therapist

Simply put, a psychologist assesses, diagnoses and treats a person suffering from a mental health illness or a psychological issue. A psychiatrist is a trained medical doctor who can prescribe you medication to cope with a mental illness. Therapists cannot prescribe you medication, instead they typically utilize a combination of therapies to teach you coping mechanisms for your mental health.

If you choose to see a psychiatrist, it is strongly recommended that you do so in tandem with frequent therapy sessions. To determine what type of therapy may be best for you, please visit the Types of Therapy and Types of Specialists page.

Medication

Some people find that medication along with therapy is a necessity for full recovery. This may entail a short-term timeline, or medication may be utilized throughout a lifetime of care. It should be noted that your general practitioner can also prescribe you medication for mental health. However, be aware that your general practitioner may not have the same specialist knowledge as a certified psychiatrist.

Medication has been heavily stigmatized in the past but here at TMHH, we know that it can be a life saver. Remember to also follow your doctor’s specific instructions when taking your prescription and never stop your medication unless otherwise instructed by a doctor.

Starting a new medication can be nerve wracking as every person’s reaction to a drug is unique. Just remember that you are not alone in this experience. You can find a support group right for you under the Resources page.

“I have been on a varying mix of psychiatric medication over the past four years, and several have had intolerable side effects.

It can be scary starting a new medication after another has just failed, but I can assure you that the revolving door of new prescriptions does have an end in sight.

For the past year I have been stable on three medications. I've pa

rtnered therapy with meditation, the result has given me the strength to confront my depression and grow into a self-loving, ambitious woman.”

“Therapy has ALWAYS scared me. The thought of having to confront my mental issues that have plagued me for years, crippled me... or so I thought. My first time in therapy was not actually that bad! She was sweet and took everything slow. I felt in control.

I still get anxiety about going to my sessions, and even had to take a short break. But just like anything that is unknown, it can seem scary and daunting. But boy is it worth it! I have grown so much and learned so much about me.

It is a blessing to work with a professional through traumatic issues from the past. This is a blessing to become a better, healthier person.”
